Most people ordering one have the same questions. How big should it be? Which font will actually be readable in neon? Is it safe in a child's room and fine to leave on at night? Will it look good in wedding photos? What does it cost, and can it arrive before the date? This page answers each of those, based on the signs we make every week.
What a personalised neon sign is
A personalised neon sign is a custom LED neon light spelling a name or words of your choice, made from flexible LED neon strip bent to your lettering and fixed to an acrylic backing. It runs on a low-voltage 12 V adapter from a normal wall socket, stays cool to the touch and comes with a dimmer.
It's not glass neon. Traditional neon is gas in hand-bent glass tubes, which is fragile, runs at high voltage and gets warm. The signs sold for homes and events today are LED neon: a strip of small LEDs inside a soft silicone or PVC sleeve that spreads the light into a smooth line. It looks very close to glass neon from a normal distance, weighs little, and doesn't break if it's knocked. Our neon signs page compares the two in more detail.
What comes with every sign we make
- The neon, bent to your approved design, in one or more colours
- A clear acrylic backing, cut to the shape you choose, with pre-drilled holes
- A 12 V power adapter with a UAE three-pin (UK-type) plug and about 2 metres of clear cable from the sign
- A dimmer, either a small inline switch or a remote control
- Wall fixings (stand-offs or screws and plugs), or hanging chain on request
- A 1-year warranty on the LEDs, adapter and workmanship
The UAE uses the same three-pin sockets as the UK. That's worth checking if you buy a sign online from abroad: many arrive with a US or EU plug and a travel adapter, which is untidy and sometimes unsafe.

Ideas: what people put on a personalised neon sign
The most popular personalised signs are single names, couples' names, family surnames and short phrases. Shorter usually looks better: a name of up to about eight letters, or a phrase of two to four words, reads clearly from across a room and keeps the price down.
- A child's name for a bedroom or nursery, often in pink, warm white or a pastel blue, sometimes with a small star, heart or moon.
- Couple names or initials such as "Omar & Layla" or "A + S", for a bedroom, anniversary or engagement.
- A family surname like "The Khans" or "Al Mansoori Family" for a living room, majlis or hallway.
- Wedding phrases: "Better Together", "Happily Ever After", "Mr & Mrs", or a wedding hashtag.
- Birthday and milestone signs: "Happy Birthday", "Oh Baby", "Sweet 16", "30", or a name with the age.
- Engagement signs: "Will you marry me?", "She said yes", "Engaged".
- Arabic names and words, on their own or next to English: a child's name, "Mashallah", "Bismillah", "Alhamdulillah", or a family name for a majlis.
- Room and hobby signs: a gamer tag above a desk, "Good Vibes", "Stay Wild", a music or sports motif.
- Signatures and handwriting: a signature, or a note in a loved one's own handwriting, traced into neon.
- Small shapes with the name: hearts, crowns, rainbows, clouds, lightning bolts and flowers work well. Detailed pictures don't.
If the sign is also for a small business, such as a home bakery, a salon chair or an online shop's photo corner, the same rules apply. Larger shopfront signs are covered on our main neon signs page.
Choosing the size of your name sign
For most bedrooms a name sign 50 to 80 cm wide is right, for a living room or majlis wall 80 to 120 cm, and for a wedding backdrop 100 to 150 cm. The width you need depends on where the sign hangs, how far away people will see it, and how many letters it has.
| Where it goes | Typical width | Viewing distance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desk, shelf or bedside | 30–45 cm | Under 2 m | Short names or initials only |
| Child's bedroom or nursery | 50–70 cm | 2–4 m | Above the bed or cot, out of reach |
| Adult bedroom, above the bed | 70–100 cm | 3–5 m | About half to two-thirds the width of the bed |
| Living room, majlis or hallway | 80–120 cm | 4–6 m | Family names, phrases |
| Wedding or event backdrop | 100–150 cm | 5–15 m and in photos | Neon Lanes also cites 100–150 cm as typical for weddings (Neon Lanes FAQs) |
| Stage or large venue | 150–250 cm | 15 m+ | Often made in sections |
Why the number of letters matters
The size people quote is the width of the whole sign, but what you actually read is the height of the letters. A five-letter name at 60 cm wide has tall, clear letters. A 15-letter phrase at 60 cm has small letters that are hard to read and harder for us to bend neatly. As a rule of thumb, allow about 8 to 12 cm of width per letter for a script name, and make multi-word phrases two lines rather than one long line.
For example, "Sara" works at 50 cm wide. "Happily Ever After" is better as two or three lines at 90 to 120 cm. "Al Mansoori Family" reads well as two lines at 100 cm.
The smallest letters that work
Neon is a line of light about 6 to 8 mm thick, so very small letters blur together: loops fill in and the gaps between strokes disappear. We keep lowercase script letters at least about 6 to 8 cm tall, and capital letters at least about 8 cm. If your design needs anything smaller, such as a date under a couple's names, we can laser-engrave or print it on the acrylic backing instead of making it in neon.
Check it on your wall first
The easiest way to choose is to cut a piece of paper or tape to the size you're thinking of and stick it on the wall for a day. Most people find their first guess is too small. We also send a mockup on a photo of your wall if you send us one.
Fonts, colours and backing
The font affects how readable and how good your sign looks more than anything else, followed by the colour and the shape of the backing. We'll adjust any font so it works in neon, and show you the result in the mockup before we make anything.
Fonts that work in neon
Neon is drawn as a single continuous line, so fonts that look like handwriting work best. Script and handwritten fonts are the most popular for names because the letters join naturally. Clean sans-serif capitals suit short words, initials and modern rooms. Heavy, decorative or serif fonts with thick-and-thin strokes don't translate well, because neon can only draw one line thickness; we make an outline version or suggest something close.
A few practical points:
- Joined script means fewer breaks in the neon, which looks tidier and costs a little less.
- Letters like "e", "a" and "o" in tight script fonts can close up; we open them slightly on the drawing.
- Dots on "i" and "j", and apostrophes, are separate small pieces; they can be neon or engraved.
- Arabic calligraphy works beautifully in neon, but the dots and small marks need care. We send the Arabic drawing for you, or someone who reads Arabic, to check.
Handwriting, signatures and drawings
Some of the most meaningful signs are made from someone's own handwriting: a grandparent's note, a child's first written name, or a couple's signatures from their wedding certificate. Write it with a thick marker on white paper, take a straight-on photo in good light, and send it to us. We trace it into a single neon line, keeping the character of the writing while smoothing shaky strokes.
Simple drawings work too, such as a child's drawing of a heart, a pet's outline, or a line-art portrait. The simpler the line, the better it looks in neon. Shading, fills and fine detail can't be made in neon, but they can be printed on the backing behind it.
Colours
LED neon comes in a wide range of fixed colours, including warm white, cool white, pink, hot pink, red, orange, yellow, lemon, green, ice blue, blue and purple. Pink and warm white are the most ordered for names and weddings; ice blue and purple are popular for gaming and teenage rooms.
You can mix colours in one sign, for example a white name with a pink heart. Each colour is a separate run of neon, so more colours means a slightly higher price. RGB (colour-changing) neon can switch between colours and run effects from a remote or phone app. It's fun for kids' rooms and parties, but a single colour looks sharper and more like real neon. RGB is also a little bulkier and the whites are never as clean.
Backing and shape
The neon is fixed to clear acrylic, usually 5 mm thick. The shape of the backing changes the look:
- Cut to shape (contour cut) follows the outline of the letters with a small margin. This is the most popular: on the wall, the neon seems to float.
- Rectangle is simpler, stronger and cheaper, and suits signs that stand on a shelf or easel.
- Coloured, mirror or printed backing adds a design behind the neon, such as a photo, a pattern or a gold mirror plate.
Signs can hang on stand-offs (metal spacers that hold the sign away from the wall), on screws, on a chain from a hook, or stand on a small base or easel.
Neon lights for your bedroom or room
A neon name sign works well in a bedroom as a soft accent light, as long as you choose a warm colour, dim it at night and put it where it doesn't shine into your eyes in bed. Used like that, it's more like a lamp than a bright sign.
Colour and sleep
Light in the evening affects sleep, and some colours affect it more than others. Harvard Health reports that blue light suppressed the sleep hormone melatonin for about twice as long as green light, and advises using "dim red lights for night lights" because red light is the least likely to disturb your body clock (Harvard Health). It also notes that even dim light can have an effect.
What that means for a bedroom sign:
- Warm white, red, orange and pink are the gentlest colours if the sign will be on in the evening.
- Ice blue, blue and cool white look great, but are better switched off an hour or two before sleep, or used in rooms you don't sleep in.
- Dim it. Most people run a bedroom sign at 20 to 50% brightness in the evening. At full power it's brighter than you need.
- Use a timer. A plug-in timer or smart plug can switch the sign off at bedtime, which also saves you remembering.
Where to put it in a bedroom
- Above the headboard is the classic spot. The light falls on the wall behind you, not into your eyes, and the sign is centred in photos. Keep the bottom edge about 20 to 40 cm above the headboard.
- Opposite the bed looks dramatic but shines straight at you, so keep it dimmed or off at night.
- Above a desk, vanity or gaming set-up works well: the sign adds colour without being in your line of sight when you sleep.
- Near a socket. The cable from the sign to the adapter is about 2 metres, and the adapter needs a socket. Plan the spot so the cable can run down neatly, or we can make the cable longer.
Living rooms, majlis and hallways
In shared rooms a name sign is usually a feature, not a light source, so it can be bigger and brighter. A family name above a sofa, a console table or a majlis seating area works at 80 to 120 cm. Hang it so the centre is roughly at eye level for someone standing, or a little higher above furniture. On a feature wall with wallpaper, wood panelling or a dark paint colour, neon stands out more, and warm white or gold-toned colours sit well with most interiors. In a long hallway or at the end of a corridor, a short word or name in a single colour draws the eye without overpowering the space.
Is it OK to leave it on all night?
Yes, in terms of safety. LED neon runs at 12 V, stays cool and uses very little power, so leaving it on overnight isn't a fire or electrical risk when you use the adapter supplied. Whether it's good for your sleep is another question: a dim, warm-coloured sign is the better choice if you want a night light.
Running cost is tiny. A 60 cm name sign uses roughly 10 to 20 watts, so even left on 10 hours every night it costs well under AED 5 a month on a DEWA residential bill.
Kids' rooms, safety and rented flats
LED neon is one of the safer decorative lights for a child's room because it runs at low voltage, doesn't get hot and has no glass to break. The real risks are the cable and adapter, and small hands pulling on the sign, so placement matters more than the sign itself.
Safety checklist for a child's room
- Hang the sign above cot or bed height and out of reach, not on a shelf a toddler can pull down.
- Fix it securely with screws or stand-offs rather than tape alone.
- Clip the cable to the wall or run it behind furniture so it can't become a loop, and keep the adapter behind furniture or high.
- Use the adapter that came with the sign. A cheap replacement adapter is the part most likely to fail.
- Choose a warm colour and a dimmer so it can double as a night light.
Hanging a sign in a rented flat
Many tenancy agreements in Dubai ask you to return the walls in their original condition, so drilling can mean filling and painting when you move out. There are three ways to avoid it:
- Heavy-duty adhesive hooks or strips, rated well above the sign's weight. A 60 cm name sign weighs about 1 kg, so this works for small and medium signs on smooth painted walls. They can lose grip on textured paint or in a hot room.
- Hang it from a picture rail, curtain rail or shelf with clear cord or a thin chain.
- Stand it on a shelf, dresser or desk with a rectangular backing or a small base.
Four small screw holes are easy to fill, so if your landlord allows it, screws are still the most secure option.
Wedding and event neon signs
A custom wedding neon sign is usually the couple's names, initials or a short phrase at 100 to 150 cm wide, hung on a backdrop behind the couple, at the entrance or over a dessert table. Neon is popular for weddings because it glows in dim halls, shows well in photos, and can go on a wall at home afterwards.
Where it goes at an event
- Behind the kosha or stage, as the focal point of photos. This needs the largest size, usually 120 to 150 cm or more.
- On a photo wall at the entrance, often on a flower wall or a white panel.
- Over the cake or dessert table, where 60 to 100 cm is enough.
- At the reception or henna night, with "Welcome", names or a hashtag.
Buy or rent?
Venues and event companies in Dubai often rent standard signs such as "Better Together" or "Mr & Mrs". Renting is cheaper if you want a common phrase for one night. A personalised sign with your names, date or Arabic is made to order and yours to keep; many couples hang it at home afterwards, which is why we build event signs to the same standard as home signs. We make signs to buy, not to rent.
How neon looks in photos
Neon photographs well, but a few details make a big difference:
- Don't run it at full brightness during photos. At 50 to 70% the letters look crisp instead of blown out, and faces stay properly lit.
- White, warm white and pink are the easiest colours for photographers. Deep blue and red can tint skin tones.
- Mount it on the flower wall or backdrop, not in front of it, so it doesn't cast odd shadows on the couple.
- Tell your photographer the sign's colour ahead of time.
Practical checks for the venue
- Power: the sign needs a normal socket within about 2 metres, or an extension lead the venue approves. We can supply a longer cable.
- Mounting: ask the decorator how the sign will be fixed to the backdrop; we can add hanging chains, cable-tie points or an easel.
- Arabic and English: many Dubai weddings use both. The Arabic can go above the English or beside it, and the two should be about the same visual size.
- Transport: signs over about 120 cm travel best in a padded crate or are made in sections, which we arrange.
Birthday, engagement and baby shower signs follow the same rules at a smaller size: 60 to 100 cm is usually enough for "Happy Birthday" or a name with an age.

Personalised neon as a gift
A name sign makes a personal gift for a new baby, a teenager's birthday, an anniversary, a new home or a colleague leaving, because it's made for one person and gets used every day. What matters most for a gift is getting the spelling, the font and the timing right.
- Check the spelling with someone who knows it, especially for names with several English spellings (Mohammed, Muhammad, Mohamed) and for Arabic.
- Choose a safe size, 50 to 70 cm, which fits most rooms.
- Pick a neutral colour like warm white or pink if you're not sure of the room's colours.
- Order early for Eid, Valentine's Day, graduation and Mother's Day, when many shops are busy.
- Ask for gift packing and delivery straight to the recipient, with a note. We can do both.
For companies, we also make small neon logos or team names as corporate gifts and for office corners, and our LED sign boards cover larger office signs.
How much does a personalised neon sign cost?
Personalised neon signs are priced mainly by the length of neon used, which depends on the width, the number of letters and lines, and the font. Extra colours, RGB, special backing and rush production add to it. The ranges below are typical Dubai prices before VAT and are a guide only.
| Size (width) | Typical use | Guide price |
|---|---|---|
| 30–45 cm | Initials, short name, desk sign | AED 250–450 |
| 50–70 cm | Child's name, bedroom sign | AED 400–750 |
| 80–100 cm | Couple names, family name, living room | AED 700–1,300 |
| 100–150 cm | Wedding or event backdrop | AED 1,200–2,500 |
| Extras | RGB colour change, second colour, mirror or printed backing, stand, rush | AED 50–250 each |
What changes the price
- Amount of neon. A long phrase or large script with many loops uses more neon than a short name of the same width.
- Number of colours. Each colour is a separate run, with its own joins and wiring.
- RGB. Colour-changing neon and its controller cost more than a single colour.
- Backing. Cut-to-shape takes more cutting time than a rectangle; mirror and printed backings cost more.
- Rush orders. Jumping the queue for an event date adds a fee.
About very cheap personalised neon signs
Online marketplaces sell personalised neon from about the price of a takeaway dinner. They can be fine for a short-term party, but the low price usually comes from:
- PVC neon flex instead of silicone, which can yellow and harden with age and heat.
- Thin, uncertified adapters, often with a foreign plug.
- Tiny letters, because the listed size is the whole board, not the lettering.
- No proof before production, so spelling or Arabic mistakes arrive with the sign.
- No local warranty, so a failed adapter means shipping it back abroad.
We use silicone neon flex and certified adapters, and we send a proof you approve. The difference between PVC and silicone neon is explained on our neon signs page.
Ordering against a date
Most personalised neon signs take 4–7 working days to make after you approve the design, plus delivery in Dubai, usually the next day. For a wedding, birthday or gift, leave at least two weeks before the date so there's time for the proof, any changes, and a buffer.
A simple timeline for an event:
- 3 to 4 weeks before: send the names, words, colours and where the sign will go. We send a mockup and price within 24 hours.
- 2 to 3 weeks before: approve the design and pay the deposit. Production starts.
- 1 week before: we test the sign, photograph it lit, and deliver or you collect.
- At the venue: the decorator mounts it and plugs it in. Keep the remote with someone who's not in the photos.
Short on time? Rush production is often possible for simple single-colour signs. Ask us before you order anywhere, because Eid, National Day, and the wedding season from roughly October to April are the busiest times.
How we make your sign
Every personalised sign is made by hand in our workshop in Dubai, from a drawing you approve. The whole process usually takes 4–7 working days.
- Brief. You send the words, colour, rough size and where it will hang. A photo of the wall helps.
- Mockup. We draw the sign at true size in neon lines, adjusted for your font, and place it on a photo of your wall or a sample room. You get the price at the same time.
- Changes. Change the font, size, colour or wording as often as you need until it's right. We check the Arabic, if there is any, with a native reader.
- Cutting. The acrylic backing is laser-cut to shape, with the neon's path engraved as a guide and holes drilled for fixing.
- Bending. The neon flex is cut, bent along the guide and fixed into place, with each joint sealed.
- Testing. We run the sign for several hours, check every joint and the dimmer, and photograph it lit for you.
- Delivery. We pack it in foam and deliver across Dubai, or ship to other emirates. Installation is available if you'd rather not hang it yourself.
Care, controllers and repairs
LED neon needs almost no care: dust it now and then with a soft dry cloth, keep it out of direct sun and water, and use the adapter it came with. Good LED neon is rated for tens of thousands of hours; one maker quotes over 50,000 hours (Neon Lanes FAQs).
- Dimmer or remote not working? Check the remote's battery and that the receiver on the cable isn't blocked. We can replace a lost remote.
- Part of the sign dark? Usually a broken joint or a damaged wire, which we can repair.
- Whole sign off? Usually the adapter. Try a replacement of the same rating from us rather than a random adapter.
- Moving house? Keep the original box, or wrap the sign in bubble wrap face-up and carry it flat.
We repair and re-power personalised neon signs, including ones bought elsewhere, where the neon is still sound.
