Lighting changes how a sign reads more than almost any other choice. The same letters can look bold and bright, soft and premium, or clean and minimal — depending on where the light comes from.
Here's how the three main options compare, and how to pick the right one for your frontage.
The three styles at a glance
| Style | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Front-lit | LEDs inside the letter shine through a translucent face | Roadside, retail, long viewing distance |
| Halo-lit | Light shines backwards onto the wall, outlining each letter | Offices, boutiques, hospitality |
| Non-lit | No internal light; relies on daylight or spotlights | Receptions, indoor walls, daytime frontages |
Front-lit letters
Front-lit letters have an acrylic face with LEDs behind it, so the whole letter glows. They're the brightest option and stay readable from a distance, which makes them a common choice for shopfronts on busy roads.
- Face colour can match your brand exactly
- Strong visibility at night
- Works well with bold, simple typefaces
Halo-lit letters
Halo-lit (or back-lit) letters are solid on the front — often metal — and mounted slightly off the wall. Light spills out behind them and creates a soft outline. The effect is subtle and premium rather than bright.
Non-lit letters
Non-lit letters have no electrics, so they're simpler to fabricate and install. They suit reception walls, indoor spaces and frontages that mainly trade in daylight — and can be lit later with external spotlights.
How to choose
- 1When do most customers see you? Evening trade points to front-lit or halo-lit.
- 2How far away are they? Long distances favour the brightness of front-lit letters.
- 3What feel suits your brand? Halo lighting reads as understated and premium.
- 4What does the building allow? Landlord and approval rules can limit lighting — check before you design.
